Visit the exotic coffin makers of the Ga tribe, known around the world for their intricate and flamboyant design. Crafted to resemble an object of importance to the deceased, these beautiful coffins can be shaped into nearly any object, including planes, crabs, or even a bottle of beer.
Families create bespoke fantasy coffins for their deceased loved ones in the belief that this will ensure their enjoyable departure and favours for those left behind.
Your half-day experience begins in Accra with a morning pick-up at a location of your choice. You will travel in an air-conditioned vehicle or taxi to the fantasy coffin workshop, located in the coastal town of Teshie, just outside of Accra.
Learn the history of this unique Ghanaian tradition from one of the artisan craftsmen. Each coffin is made-to-order according to the profession or aspirations of the deceased and can include items like animals, beer bottle, or planes. Tour the facility and examine up close the intricately designed coffins in various states of creation.
Before returning to Accra, head over to the nearby Artist Alliance Gallery with over three floors of art, sculpture, carvings and other artifacts including museum-quality coffins on display. Drop-off in Accra at a location of your choice.
