A 6-day journey covering the highlights of Ghana. Explore Accra, local markets, sandy beaches, culture-rich Ashanti Kingdom, traditional villages, the former slave dungeon at Cape Coast, and West Africa’s highest rain forest canopy walkway at Kakum National Park. Your experience also includes a traditional blessing and a special cultural performance.
Your local Experience Curator will meet your arriving flight at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana, and safely transport you to your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. There is time to refresh and relax, with a neighbourhood or Accra city orientation as time permits.
Overnight at a mid-range hotel at Osu.
Meet your Experience Curator at 8:30 to depart on guided tour of Accra. Highlights include historic Jamestown, Kwame Nkrumah Monument, Independence Square, and W.E.B. Du Bois Center.
Depart for Kumasi, the heart of the Ashanti Kingdom and Ghana's second largest city. The drive is approximately 5 hours.
Overnight at a mid-range hotel in suburban Kumasi.
Your first stop is Tano Yaw Shrine, one of the last remaining traditional Abosomfie shrine homes at Besease. Continue on to a number of villages showcasing traditional Asante handcrafts: Kente cloth weaving, Adinkra cloth stamping, and wood carving. Our last destination today is a cocoa farm.
Overnight at a mid-range hotel in suburban Kumasi.
A morning visit to the National Cultural Center, one of Ghana's best museums, followed by Manhyia Palace, home of the Ashanti King and the Komfo Anokye Sword. Spend some time browsing for mementos at the vast Kejetia market, West Africa's largest outdoor market.
Overnight at a mid-range hotel in suburban Kumasi.
Follow the Slave Route south to the coast, stopping en route at Assin Manso Slave River, one of the largest slave markets during the infamous historic trans-Atlantic slave trade. Feel the weight of cruel history at Cape Coast Castle, a former dungeon where slaves were held before being loaded onto ships bound for the Americas. Those of the Diaspora may opt for a "Door of Return" ceremony at the castle (extra fee). The total drive is approximately 4 1/2 hours.
Special evening cultural performance, and overnight at a 3-star beach resort in Elmina.
A morning visit to Kakum National Park, offering spectacular scenery and wildlife, viewed from its 333m-long canopy walkway suspended up to 27m above the forest floor. We will stop by the nearby crocodile ponds and weaver bird community at Hans Botel before returning to Accra. Your final Ghanaian experience is a visit to a typical family compound, where you will receive a traditional blessing for your safe journey home. We will deliver you safely to the airport for your evening flight home. The total drive time today is approximately 4 1/2 hours.
