Explore the Moroccan desert on this affordable 3-day trip from Marrakech. Visit traditional Berber villages in the High Atlas Mountains and learn how argan oil is made. Lunch at the country’s largest Kasbah, ride a camel through the dunes, sip fresh mint tea, and camp out under the stars before heading to Fez to complete your tour.
We will meet you at your accommodation in Marrakech and drive to Ouarzazate through the dramatic Tizi ‘n’ Tichka pass (2260m), over the High Atlas Mountains, appreciating the beauty of the landscape on the twisted roads through the Berber villages where you will have the opportunity to explore how argan oil is made by Berber women in their cooperative.
Arriving at the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the largest Kasbah in Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a house of many Glaoui family members. We will have lunch at the Kasbah before continuing on to Dades Gorge via Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa.” We will go along the “Road of the Thousand Kasbahs,” stopping at Kalaat Mgouna, the City of Roses, known for its fragrant flowers and annual May festival during the roses harvest. We continue to our accommodation in the heart of the Dades Gorge, where we have dinner and spend the night in a guesthouse/riad.
After breakfast at your riad, we drive back through the valley to see the amazing rock formation known as “the monkey toes” and the still-standing 19th century Kasbah of Ait Yul. Leaving the Dades valley towards Tinrghir and the Todra Valley, you will see panoramic views of the old mud Berber villages overlooking the valley. Arriving at the Gorge is an opportunity to walk under the 300 m high red cliff, where many rock-climbers come to enjoy their preferred sport.
We will continue on to Erfoud and Rissani where we’ll have lunch before heading on to the village of Merzouga where your camel will be waiting you. You will be welcomed with a glass of mint tea and a turban (desert scarf) before riding your camel, guided by an experienced Camel Guide, to explore within the mysterious sand-sea of the Erg-Chebbi. Here you’ll spend your first night under the stars, or if you prefer, in a traditional Berber nomad tent.
Wake up early morning to enjoy the sunrise over the dunes, possibly the best desert moment, followed by a typical breakfast in the bivouac of Merzouga. Ride your camel back to the hotel where you have time for a quick shower. Meet the driver and travel on to Fes via the beautiful Ziz Valley, Errachida and Midelt. Lunch on the way and take a short break to watch the monkeys in cedar Gourrou forests of the middle Atlas close to Azrou. Our tour ends with a drop off at a location of your choice in Fes.
